2010 Trial Statistics
The number of felony criminal trials heard by jurors in El Paso County was record-setting
in 2010. Our attorneys, investigators, and staff tried 165 jury trials for felonies last year
resulting in a combined 620 days in court. These trials also represent 14 homicide cases heard by jurors in 2010.
4.20.10 Govenor Ritter Signs the Veterans Court Bill
Veterans Court was established during the first year Dan May took office. The program was designed
to hold defendants who are serving, or have served, in the military accountable
while assisting them in achieving long term stability to become law-abiding
citizens and successful members of the community. Early identification and
assessment of veterans with trauma spectrum mental illness (such as PTSD and
TBI) and proper placement for treatment are part of this program. This program
provides a cost effective, integrated continuum of care through the utilization
of community resources for veterans involved with the criminal justice system as
well as their families.
9.25.10 Rememberance Day
The first annual National Day of Remembrance for
Homicide Victims was held at Acacia Park and was sponsored by Mothers of Murdered Youth, the
District Attorney's Office, and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Many of those who participated
have lost loved ones to homicide, and everyone got a chance to talk about their loved one and share
stories. Balloons with the names of victims along with a message to them were released by families and friends.
10.11.10 Cross Training Day
Cross-Training Day for Deputy DA's in the District Attorney's office. Giving up their Columbus Day
holiday, our Deputy DA's spent the day with members of the Colorado Springs Police Department
learning what police officers do. Many Police Academy training methods were utilized by our
attorneys, including the use of firearms, tasers, and arrest techniques.
